Happy Memorial Day...................

My Dad served for three years during the Second World War.  A sergeant with the 9th Infantry, he got to cross North Africa, see a considerable part of Sicily, land at Normandy (D-Day +3), and cross France and Belgium.  He would never talk about his experiences while I was growing up.  He was, however, a big fan of cartoonist Bill Mauldin and he gave me his copy of Mauldin's 1945 book, Up Front.  Sometimes pictures are easier than words.  Here is a sampling of Mauldin's work from the book:

"Go ahead, Joe.  If ya don't bust it ya'll worry
about it all night."

"That can't be no combat man.  He's looking
for a fight.'
"Fresh, spirited American troops, flushed with
victory, are bringing in thousands of hungry,
ragged, battle weary prisoners"

"Straighten those shoulders!  How long you been
in the army?"
