A ruler must not start a war out of anger;
A general must not fight a battle out of resentment.
Engage only when it is in the interest of the State;
Cease when it is to its detriment.
For while anger can be restored to happiness
and resentment can become pleasantness,
a State that has perished cannot be restored
and a man who is dead cannot be resurrected.
