leakage.................

The leakage of prestige from politicized universities is overdue and wholesome. Those schools that once were preeminent and now are punchlines might soon have a bruising rendezvous with real politics, which, unlike the sandbox radicalism of campus playgrounds, can be serious.

Life its ownself......................................

In fact, you'd need to squint pretty hard to view my life as a framework for happiness.  I grew up an unremarkable kid in California in the seventies, skinny and awkward.  I got mediocre grades, and didn't test well either.  I applied to UCLA and was rejected, which didn't seem like a big deal—my father assured me that "Someone with my street smarts doesn't need college."  I had no street smarts, just a father with a new family who didn't want to pay for college.  He did, however, secure me a job installing shelving.  The job paid $15 to $18 an hour, which seemed like a lot of money.  I could buy a nice car, my only real goal at the time.
During twelfth grade, we'd walk into Westwood Village and get ice cream.  My friends would shoplift.  I'd head home when my friends started shoving Peter Frampton shirts into their pants—not because I was more ethical than them, but because my single mother couldn't handle a call from the LAPD to come get me.  Walking back from Westwood Village  I crossed Hilgard Avenue, where UCLA sororities lined the street.  It was homecoming week, and there were thousands of young women standing in front of their houses singing songs and generally looking like a cross between a Norman Rockwell painting and a late-night Cinemax movie.
At that moment, I decided I needed to go to college and went home to write another letter to UCLA admissions.  I told them the truth:  "I am a native son of California, raised by an immigrant single mother who is a secretary, and if you don't let me in, I'm going to be installing shelving for the rest of my life."  They admitted me nine days before classes started.  My mom told me that, as the first person to attend college on either side of the family, I could now "do anything."

The more things change...........

After three years at Glasgow Smith went on to spend another six, from 1740 to 1746, as a student at Oxford University's Balliol College.   In stark contrast to his experience at Glasgow, Smith found his classes at Oxford exceedingly uninspiring.  He later remarked that the professors there has "given up altogether even the pretence of teaching," and he was also clearly thinking of Oxford when he wrote that the best endowed universities often serve as "sanctuaries in which exploded systems and obsolete prejudices found shelter and protection, after they had been hunted out of every other corner of the world."

So, you're telling me now............

................that my college degree is worthless?   The history major in me quickly learned (by watching a significant percentage of the freshmen football players flunk calculus) that studying higher math might interfere with my college career.  Forty-three years after graduating I haven't had the need for any math beyond what I learned in high school algebra and geometry.  Your experience may vary.

Now that the Buckeyes...............................

..............have been vanquished by the Hokies, it will be difficult to take the rest of the college football season seriously.  Speaking of not taking college football seriously, friend Bilbo offers a host of quotes disparaging the players from various "powerhouse" colleges.  His full list is here.  Since we are concerned only with Buckeyes around here, his Ohio State quotes are here:

Ohio State football coach Urban Meyer recently said of one of his players: "He doesn't know the meaning of the word fear. In fact, I just saw his grades and he doesn't know the meaning of a lot of words."

How many Ohio State freshmen football players does it take to change a light bulb? None. That's a sophomore course.

College shopping.................

My Sweetie and I took our youngest to visit the University
of Cincinnati yesterday.  We were much surprised and very
pleased with the visit.  A beautiful school with beautiful
architecture in an urban setting. Think we will be visiting it again.
