Here is a radical idea...............

Can we build a conceptual framework for thinking about the world that is compatible with what we have learned about it from both theories?

Here, in the vanguard, beyond the borders of knowledge, science becomes even more beautiful—incandescent in the forge of nascent ideas, of intuitions, of attempts.  Of roads taken and then abandoned, of enthusiasms.  In the effort to imagine what has not yet been imagined,

Twenty years ago the fog was thick.  Today paths have appeared that have elicited enthusiasm and optimism.  There are more than one of these, so it can't be said that the problem has been resolved.  The multiplicity generates controversy, but the debate is healthy: until the fog has lifted completely, it's good to have criticism and opposing views.

about those rates................

In truth, Child's advocacy for lower rates was intensely self-interested.  Like a modern buyout baron's, his control of the East India Company, where he was shortly to become Governor, was maintained through the extensive use of debt: the greater the gap between the company's profits and the cost of borrowing, the greater his personal gains. . . .

There was a sense that higher interest rates improved the quality of lending.  The author of 'Usury at Six percent Examined' (1669) claimed that a reasonable lending charge ensured that money got into the best hands:  "Tis much better for the publick,' . . . Thomas Manley added that lowering the rate of interest would involve robbing Peter (the creditor) to pay Paul (the borrower).

on binary debates.................

Where I get frustrated, though, is the binary debate I see in business, boardrooms, and books declaring that the ruthless efficiency of Amazon or Shopify has finally won out over the romance of life and that retail is dead.  Retail is not dead, but utilitarian retail is dead because there's now a much faster, cheaper, and more convenient way to acquire cheap commodities online if that's all you're looking to purchase.  Human beings, however, want more than commodities and have desires greater than their possessions.

The debates between function versus emotion, literal versus imagination, and rock-bottom prices versus high-fidelity curation have been going on for generations in retail and will continue long into the future.  Fortunately, there's enough room in the market for many players and positions to win.

On free speech......................

Whether Trump’s policies turn out to be right or wrong evidently matters. But the resumption of the great American debate, of speech that is unencumbered and unafraid, of a Jeffersonian open society, matters much more, since it will enable progress.
