About letting book learning get in the way of your education.......

remembered precisely zero applicable skills from my
studies."

I suspect his notion is that while a fancy degree may provide
a useful credential, it should not be mistaken for expertise.  You
get that the old-fashioned way, you earn it.

I remember back in the early 1980's blessing the creators of
Trivial Pursuit..  Their game provided the first place I could
skillfully apply the book learning that came with my B.A. in
History. 

Anyway, Scott gets a coveted "atta boy" from this blog for
this comment:

Learn everything of interest you can get your hands on.
Become expert enough to reach goals, to help people, to
make a living doing what you love........No one is going to
do this for you. No school system, no book, no teacher –
